Meaning of Vivah

VI (special) + Vah (responsibility)
Accepting the new responsibility by new couples which is very special for them. This responsibility is very special commitment which brings happiness not only for the bride and groom but for the entire family. Bride and groom will be entering into the new phase of life by taking an oath to live together as best friends for the rest of the life. Now onwards they are not only accountable for themselves but they are accountable for the entire society.
Madhuve( in Kannada)
Madhu means nectar .This signifies that marriage is as sweet as nectar and the relationship of the couples are as seamless as nectar drops , perfectly consistent and coherent.

Tuesday, 2nd March, 2010 / 19.00 hrs
Varpooje - Nischitarta : - Groom and his relatives entering the holy place of marriage ie kalyana mantapa . The bride's family welcomes the groom’s family to the venue. Parents of both the families promises each other to witness the marriage of their children and blessing them for entering the new phase of life.

Gauri Pooja :- Here, in the beginning of the auspicious marriage day, Bride performs this ritual by worshipping goddess Gauri along with goddesses’ Mahalakshmi and Sachi to get the blessing of positive energy, strength and a long, happy, married life with her husband.

Wednesday, 3rd March, 2010 / 9.00 hrs
Kashi Yatra :- In today’s situation it is just a symbolic event. Here, the groom will get ready for the kashi yatra in order to pursue his higher education. On the way bride's father and the guru will keep the marriage proposal and suggest the groom to continue the yatra after the marriage. Listening to the words of elders, the groom will decide to marry first.

Wednesday, 3rd March, 2010 / 10.00 to 11.00 hrs
 Kanya nereekshana :- Here, on returning half way from kashi yatra, groom along with the family members and elders, will look forward for the bride to enter the holy place of marriage. At the sumuhurtam, precise auspicious moment, with the cloth veil still upheld, the bride and the groom place and hold a paste, made of cumin seeds and Jaggery / brown sugar, over each other's heads. The cloth veil is then removed, unveiling the "new' life in holy matrimony.

Wednesday, 3rd March, 2010 / 11.00 to 12.00 hrs
Mangalya daarana: - It is considered as one of the prime event during the marriage. Here the groom by offering the prayer to all the deities would be tying nuptial knot (magalasutra , a sacred necklace tied around the bride’s neck) . The groom will say the following verse while tying the nuptial knot.

This is a holy thread, this is essential for long life. I tie this around your neck O maiden, having many auspicious attributes, may you live happily for a hundred years with me. we believe to have the presence of almighty in the form of thread who protects us from all the evil and blesses us with the long ,happy married life.

Laaja homa, parinayana and saptapadi :- This is a ritual where fire is considered as a prime witness. The holy fire is lit symbolizing purity and serving as a witness to the vows that are to follow.

Parinayana is an event where bride and groom will hold each other’s hands and come around the sacred fire thus by taking the blessings of Lord Agni.

Saptapadi.
Holding each other's hands, the couple takes seven steps, symbolic of the seven marital vows.

As they hold hands and walk, the bride and groom pledge the following vows:
  1. Let us take this first step vowing to keep a pure household, avoiding all things injurious to our health.
  2. Let us take this second step vowing to develop mental, physical and spiritual strengths.
  3. Let us take this third step with the aim of increasing our wealth by righteous means.
  4. Let us take this fourth step to acquire knowledge, happiness, and harmony by mutual love and trust.
  5. Let us take this fifth step to pray for virtuous, intelligent and courageous children.
  6. Let us take this sixth step for longevity.
  7. Let us take this final step to vow that we will always remain true companions and life-long partners.

This is a very significant event in the whole marriage ceremony, and it is only when they walk seven steps together, that the marriage is complete legally according to the vedic hindu scriptures.
